We have added a couple of new things this year.

There will be a "Treasure Hunt" for the kiddies. And for the first time in the Valley we will pose for a group "Phoon"Picture... What? You don't know what a Phoon is? That's ok. You can still come.

When the page gets approved please post a "Will Attend" ASAP because the space may be limited.

please select "watch this page" after confirm your attendance so that you have all the latest news on the event.

Same as last year, the registration fee will be $10.00 per person/family and we are asking ask for a "Donation" of a prize worth 5 to 10 Dollars (if you have a business that can donate prizes then by all means bring them too)...This way everyone will be guaranteed to go home with something. If everyone that shows up is willing to bring a prize, we may be able to allow more then 50 teams to attend... It makes it hard for us to plan the right amount of prizes if we don't know how many people are coming.

These are some things you will need to bring...we will update the list if we think of other things:
An unwrapped prize worth 5 to 10 Dollars (some sort of Geo/Outdoors thingy)
A lunch or a potluck dish to share.
Don't forget to where lots of green.

BCGA Fall Meet & Greet - Royston

The 2006 British Columbia Geocaching Association fall Meet & Greet will be held Novenmber 4th at Fallen Alders hall in Royston. Mid Island Geocachers will be manning a booth at this years REXPO at CFB Comox recreation hall. REXPO is held once a year to give military personnel and their families an exhibition of all the sports and recreation opportunities in the Comox Valley. There will be lots of of booths from recreation related businesses and clubs from all over the Comox Valley.....ours will be one of them. If you are in the military at CFB Comox we hope to see you there. Saturday 11:00 am till 4:00 pm (I think)at the Rec Hall. Look for our banner!

Outdoor Recreation Show booth cancelled

Since only one person volunteered to help man the booth for Saturday and Sunday at the Outdoor Recreaion Show at the Courtenay Fish and Game Club we have cancelled our participation. Maybe next year.....

Outdoor Recreation Show

Mid Island Geocachers will be having an information booth at this years Outdoor Recreation Show at the Courtenay and District Fish and Game property at Comox lake. We will be there from 9:00AM - 5:00PM Saturday June 3 and 9:00AM - 3:00PM Sunday June 4th. Drop by and have a visit with us. There is no charge to enter and lots to see and do. Coordinates are: N49 38.523 W125 05.151 ( well, close anyway).

Adopted Highway

Our first cleanup of our section of adopted highway for CITO (Earth) day went very well. The Mid Island Geocachers group recently joined the Adopt-a-Highway program, and four times a year will help to clean up litter on the section of Old Island Highway between Millard Road and Marine Drive in Royston. Saturday’s cleanup of this 2.5-kilometre section of road yielded 16 large garbage bags of litter in addition to many larger items that were picked up and carted away by the Ministry of Transport.

Only one day left before the spring "Event" cache. Looks like the weather will be cloudy/sunny/with a chance of showers. So... remember to bring your rain jacket, boots, etc. as you will be outdoors for at least 5 hours. We will have a nice bonfire to cheer things up if it is dreary, but the weather does look promising. Also try to remember to bring a clipboard and pen. Lots of stamping to do and not many flat surfaces out there!

Spring GeoEvent

The spring geo event is going to be on April 1st 2006. The plans are coming along nicely and it will be a real blast. You probably have not done a cache like this before!
The location will be at Airforce Beach, the same place as always. Please be there at 10:30 AM sharp as we head out to the caches at EXACTLY 11:00 AM. This will be a timed event so don't be late. The cost will be $10.00 per team, please send it off to Tom (Coast2Coast2Coast) as soon as you know for sure you can come. We are also asking participants to bring a prize, preferrably relating to Geocaching, that we will draw for later. Other businesses are also donating some prizes so there will be lots to go around. We are also asking each team to bring something for out usual potluck. Since the event is a month later than in the past it should be a little warmer but we will still have a campfire.
This event is open to cachers everywhere.
I think we have about 40 teams registered so far.

Event cache a success

Well, I think the event "Fall Meet and Greet" cache was a big success. We filled 4 large Rubbemaid containers for the Comox Valley Food Bank, and the going away surprise for Mr GoPlayOutside completely blindsided him. It was great to put faces to the names of folks we had not yet met. Even the weather cooperated as it was sunny and warm.
It looks as if our major Geo-Event of the year will be a bit later this year but at the usual place. Probably the last Sunday in March. So pencil this date on your 2006 calendar. There will be lots of folks to visit and cahes to find.

Fall Meet 'n Greet Event

Well, we're all ready to go. Mother nature is cooperating and it looks like a good day. Don't forget that this is a donation event for the Comox Valley food bank so bring at least one item of non-perishable food stuff for each of four stages. The event cache may be off or reorganised. We cannot hold an event cache as we hoped because donation caches are not allowed under the rules of geocaching.com. Go Figure!

InFoucus Article is out!

The local Comox Valley bi-monthly InFocus magazine/newspaper has a great article about geocaching. It came about by an email I received from Ryan Stewart who wanted to do an article about geocaching. So a bunch of us got together, met up with him and chatted for a while. Then we dragged him off for a bit of the real thing. A week later we met up with Boomer Jerritt the shutterbug for InFocus and took some photos.
The result is an article that will definately generate more interest in our sport.
You can pick up a copy in varios locations about town. I got mine from Thrifty Foods and I hear that they are available in liquor stores. I will post a list of where they are available when the InFocus magazine people get back to me. I also home to get a copy for the website.

InFocus article

A group of us (Keiko's buddies, Coast2Coast2Coast, GoPlayOutside, and Rugrat and Stewie) met with Ryan, the writer that is going to do an article on Geocaching for the local In Focus magazine. We spent and hour or so chatting about geocaching the headed of to do a geocache. The weather was great and we all had a good time. The article will be out in October so will keep you posted. Ryan has also promised us the use of a digital copy of the article so we will post it online in the website somewhere.

This is Carol Hatfield from Coalburn, Nova Scotia.we have started our geocaching hunts. we already found 5! we replaced " have a ball on roys" the one that me and nicole found by fingal. it travelled quite a distance from its origional coordinates . we replaced it in its origional coordinates . Fingal is now back in action. thanks once again, for introducing us to geocaching. we love it and cant wait to get out again this weekend!

A 4x4 fun run is being organized, to get together and find some of the
caches by Horn Lake and North such as "Get a Grip"

GPSr accuracy test

During our last Mid Island mid winter get together we did a quick and dirty, and definately not scientific, comparison test of GPSr accuracy. We placed a table out on the beach then a bunch of us placed our GPS units on it and waited for a while. Then we wrote down the resultant positions. You can see the results by clicking on the Useful Stuff link. It is amazing how close they all were. All we know for sure of course. is where the table was!

2nd annual Mid Island get together

The event was a big success, I'm sure we all had a great time. The weather and geo-gods all cooperated and the caches were fun. The food was great but too abundant....no supper for us that evening. About 28 teams showed up along with families and four legged friends. It was great to put faces and names together.
Many thanks to Mr/Mrs C2C2C and Mr/Mrs GPO for putting it all together....you guys are the best!

The Great GPSr Test!

At this years Mid Island Geocaching Event on Feb 27 we will have a table set up where each team can set thier GPSr and a sheet to record the resultant position and other data. We will repeat the process an hour or so later. We will then average out all the results and post them on the website. This should give us a fair bit of interesting information about GPSr accuracy. It will tell us for sure where the table is! Make sure you look for this table when you arrive and check in.

2nd Mid Island Get Together coming on Feb 27th

Coast2Coast2Coast and Go Play Outside are hosting the Second Annual Mid Island Geocaching Get Together and Event.
It is called “Dash For The Cache” and will be held at 11:00 am on the 27th of Feb 2005 in Comox.
We are expecting about 30 teams to attend this year and we are organizing some geocaching oriented events/hunts to be followed by a potluck lunch to meet, socialize, and discus this great sport.
We have already collected some great prizes and are actively soliciting more. We are asking attendees to contribute $10.00 per person or $20.00 per team to help pay for prizes and other items needed to put on the event. Everyone will go home with something.
If you are interested in attending please email either of the teams mentioned above .
You can find our links on the “Who we are” page (http://www.migeocaching.org/who.html). We will try to invite everyone who is interested but there are limits to how many people the venue can accommodate, how many prizes we can gather, and the logistics of organizing and preparing the events. First come, first served.

It’s going to be a great time, last year was a blast and this year it will be better. This is your chance to put a face to the names you have been reading in the logs and perhaps make some new friends who share an interest in this fun sport.

We....we finally made it down here to Arizona for some serious geocaching and loafing. Took us a while to get here due to vehicle problems that were solved by getting a new CacheMobile, and then spending 2 days in Ashland Oregon waiting for the snow to dissappear in the pass.
Anyhow the weather is fine and the caching good. Hot news....WAAS works down here and there is no darn tree canopy. You just follow the GPSr and when it says "0" feet you are standing on the cache.....cool! Hope to be uploading some images soon.

We're off tomorrow (January 1st) for 5 weeks of loafing and geocaching in Arizona. I hear WAAS even works all the time down there. Apparently you just walk around and when the GPSr says 0 meters away you just bend over and pick up the cache. We'll see, sounds like a bit of a fishing story to me. I hope to make regular posts to this news link but maybe also to the discussion groups.

Trent Mouth is baaaaack!

I have unarchived the geocache "Trent Mouth" (GCHRAW) and hope it will remain intact for a while. Since we are off on January 1st for 5 weeks of heavy geocaching in Arizona, anyone having a small travel bug that needs to go south should deposit it in this cache by the end of the year and we will haul them with us.

At a founders meeting last night we decided there would be no "Members" area. All parts of the website would be open to all including the Message Boards. So folks....post away. These boards will be moderated so please try to stay on topic and be polite.

There is a new link in the Members Area. This is a small utility I wrote to average waypoints. You just enter up to 6 waypoints (minutes and decimals only) and it will average them. When I figure out how to do the degrees part I will add that as well. If anyone wants to take a crack at it and know MS Excel I will send them the file and they can mess with it.

A great day for geocaching in the Comox Valley

It was a beautifull sunny fall day here in the Comox Valley. We got tired of yard work so decided to go out and find a cache. We heard the were still salmon running in the puntledge River so we decided to go find the "Cache by the River" by Kijodi. Rumour had it the gps reception was not the finest under the tree canopy but we had no trouble at all. My old Garmin III+ can still suck in the weak signals. After finding the cache and gettin the dog dirty we decided to walk downstream to the falls and see if any salmon were still running and jumping. They were indeed. Here is a photo, not the best but.......
